Petrochemicals are chemical compounds derived from various chemical compounds, primarily from hydrocarbons, which are mainly derived from natural gas and crude oil. A petrochemical is any chemical manufactured from natural gas and crude oil as distinct from fuels and other products. Products made from petrochemicals include plastics, soaps and detergents, solvents, drugs, fertilizers, pesticides, explosives, rubbers, epoxy resins, paints, flooring and insulating materials, and synthetic fibers. Petrochemical intermediates are produced by chemical conversion of primary petrochemicals to form more complicated derivative products. Petrochemical feedstocks can be classified into three general groups, such as aromatics, olefins, and a third group that includes synthesis gas and inorganics.
