Petrochemicals; Chemical Products/Compounds Obtained From Petroleum by Refining
Petrochemicals |
Petrochemicals are chemical compounds derived from various
chemical compounds, primarily from hydrocarbons, which are mainly derived from
natural gas and crude oil. A petrochemical is any chemical manufactured from
natural gas and crude oil as distinct from fuels and other products. Products
made from petrochemicals include plastics, soaps and detergents, solvents, drugs,
fertilizers, pesticides, explosives, rubbers, epoxy resins, paints, flooring
and insulating materials, and synthetic fibers. Basic petrochemicals such as
aromatics, propylene and ethylene are the building blocks of the chemistry
industry.

Petrochemical intermediates are produced by chemical
conversion of primary petrochemicals to form more complicated derivative
products. Petrochemical feedstocks can be classified into three general groups,
such as aromatics, olefins, and a third group that includes synthesis gas and
inorganics. Olefins are used as building block materials for many products,
such as plastics, adhesives, and detergents. Aromatics (such as benzene,
toluene, and xylene) are raw materials used to make dyes and synthetic
detergents.
Aromatics are also used to make products for areas as diverse
as medicine, hygiene, transport, telecommunications, fashion and sports.
Petrochemicals provide some of the building blocks, methanol, xylenes, toluene,
butadiene, propylene, and ethylene. These products are used by consumers as
synthetic rubber, rubbing alcohol, polyester fiber, engine coolant, and/or
epoxy. Inorganic chemicals, such as phosphorus, fluorine, bromine, soda ash,
sulphur, sulphuric acid, caustic soda, chlorine, and ammonia are also base
chemicals.
Petrochemicals products find application in various everyday
use products such as household items, clothes, automobiles, furniture, tooth
brush, irrigation, synthetic detergents, electronics, packaging, medical
equipment, and performance products, among others. Hence, there is an
increasing demand for petrochemicals across the globe. The largest
petrochemical industries are located in the U.S. and Western Europe; however,
major growth in new production capacity is in the Middle East and Asia. US
Petrochemical is one of the leading supplier of raw materials feedstocks to
Petrochemical Plants Worldwide.
