Cannabis is part of a flowering plant family called the Cannabaceae. This family contains 11 genera and around 170 species. There are several potential uses for cannabis, including the treatment of chronic pain in adults. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently held a position on the use of cannabis for the treatment of chronic pain in adults. It has substantial evidence for improving pain and nausea associated with chemotherapy and has some limited evidence for treating PTSD symptoms.

The Global Medicinal Cannabis Market is estimated at US$ 5,448.4 million in 2019 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 24.4% over the forecast period (2019 – 2027).

Although the FDA has limited access to medical cannabis research, there are several studies that show that cannabis is an effective treatment. Most of these studies are surveys of cannabis users' habits. Basic science studies are also underway. Many of these studies investigate the effects of endocannabinoid compounds on the endocannabinoid system in the brain. Survey studies also involve anonymous assessments of users' habits. There are currently no well-conducted randomized trials of cannabis therapy for medical conditions, but sixty percent of the studies have proven that cannabis is safe for patients.

Despite the risks associated with marijuana use, it is still a highly effective treatment for a variety of ailments. There are many forms of marijuana available. Some forms of the plant are available as food supplements or as an infused oil. It is also available as a crossover therapy. For cancer patients, cannabis-based products are considered an excellent treatment. Its potential is not fully understood, however, because there is still a lack of high-quality evidence regarding the safety of marijuana-based medications.

Regardless of the form in which it is consumed, medicinal cannabis is a complex subject that requires a legalization. There is encouraging evidence that medicinal cannabis has the potential to help people with psychiatric conditions.
