Furniture foam is a flexible foam that's used as padding in furniture. Furniture foam offers both aesthetic and functional benefits to manufacture residential and commercial furniture products such as sofas, chairs, recliners etc. Properties such as firmness, density, compression module, resilience, and flex fatigue decides the type of foam used to manufacture/develop upholstery that provides proper comfort. Moreover, furniture foam, such as flexible polyurethane foam, makes furniture more durable and comfortable.

One of the most common uses of foam is used to create mattresses and mattress toppers. Since foam can be made to achieve nearly any desired firmness, it is often used to make mattresses and toppers to meet the diverse needs of consumers. Polyurethane foam is the most common type of furniture foam used for sofas, and is also used as toppers for mattresses. Polyurethane foam is divided into two basic types; open-cell and closed-cell. Open cell foam has small cells that are not completely sealed and allow air to fill the space or take on water if soaked.

This means the foam can be easily compressed and then naturally recover back to its original shape. Flexible polyurethane foam is used as cushioning for a variety of consumer/commercial products, including furniture. Flexible foam can be created in almost any variety of shapes and firmness. It is light, durable, comfortable, and supportive. It provides unparalleled ease of use, comfort, affordability, and durability. It is characterized by a cellular structure that allows for some degree of compression and resilience that provides a cushioning effect.

Different types of furniture foams are used for indoor, outdoor, and marine furniture. Multiple types of upholstery foam can be used in a single piece of furniture. Thus, there is an increasing demand for furniture foam. More than 1.5 billion pounds of flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) are produced in North America each year. The Polyurethane Foam Association represents FPF manufacturers and suppliers to the industry.
