Polyacrylamide is a hygroscopic polymer that is used for a variety of applications. Its properties include a high molecular weight, excellent water solubility, linear chain structure, and a wide range of ionic groups. These properties make it a useful chemical in various fields, including wastewater treatment, paper manufacturing, and mining. It can be also used as a plasticizer for laminating. It is commonly used as a flocculant, a soil conditioner, and a viscosity modifier and friction reducer in enhanced oil recovery and high volume hydraulic fracturing.

Polyacrylamide is also a popular component in cosmetics. It is often used in cosmetics to stabilize products and bind ingredients. It has foaming, anti-static, and lubricating properties. In cosmetics and personal care products, polyacrylamide is used in the formulation of many products, including moisturizers, skin cleansers, lotions and creams, sunscreens, makeup, hair and nail care products, and more. Polyacrylamide can be obtained as a liquid or as a solid, and it can be used in a variety of applications. For example, it is a strong settling agent, and it is used to thicken pulp. An anionic form is also used as a cytoplasm additive in the paper industry.

Polyacrylamide is also used for water treatment and sludge dewatering of municipal wastewater, potable water treatment, industrial wastewater, air flotation, and primary settling. According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, over 99.9% of acrylamide in the European Union is used in the production of polyacrylamides, and 80-90% of polyacrylamide is used in wastewater treatment and paper and pulp processing.
