Dodecanedioic acid is used in a wide range of applications. It is mainly found in antiseptics, painting materials, top-grade coatings, corrosion inhibitors, surfactants and engineering plastics. It is also used in manufacturing resins and pharmaceuticals. DDDA is produced through both synthetic and biotechnological processes. The synthetic process involves the oxidation of butadiene to form cyclododecatriene. This is followed by nitric acid oxidation to produce dodecanedioic acid. DDDA is obtained in its pure, white and flaky form.

It is a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. It has a high molecular weight and is generally available in a form that is free of hydroxyl groups. DDDA is used in an increasing number of industrial and commercial applications across the world as a solvent and lubricant. The Global Dodecanedioic Acid Market is expected to surpass US$ 1,074.0 million by the end of 2030 in terms of revenue, exhibiting a CAGR of 7.7% during the forecast period (2022 to 2030).

Dodecanedioic acid is used in the production of various resins such as aromatic hydrocarbon resins, epoxy, phenolic, lattices, unsaturated polyester resins, and other intermediates. These resins also have various applications in sectors like automotive, construction, and adhesives. It is also used in the manufacture of nylon 6 resins, which are commonly known as engineering plastics, and have superior properties including high stiffness and strength even at elevated temperatures. This property makes them ideal for use in applications such as aircraft and automobile components, lubricants, and other manufacturing materials.

Along with being a major raw material for the manufacture of nylon resins, dodecanedioic acid is also used in the manufacture of acrylates, phospholipids, and fatty acids. These acylated compounds have numerous applications in cosmetic and personal care, such as antiseptics, soaps, and fragrances. Furthermore, dodecanedioic acids are utilized in the formulation of a wide range of adhesives, corrosion inhibitors, capacitor electrolytes, diester synthetic lubricants, and fibers. These products are used to reduce friction and to provide an abrasion resistant coating for industrial surfaces and equipment’s.

A novel silicone adhesive was unveiled by 3M in April 2021, for enhancing medical equipment for individual having sensitive skin. The introduction of this product has helped in expanding the company’s adhesive line.
