Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit; a Rail-Less and Driver-Less Vehicle for Urban Passenger Transport

Autonomous rail rapid transit (ART) is a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) guided articulated bus system for urban passenger transport. ART is equipped with various optical and other types of sensors to allow the vehicle to automatically follow a route defined by a virtual track of markings on the roadway. Autonomous rail rapid transit is a rapidly growing segment. There are currently fully automated metro lines in operation and the number is expected to double in the coming years. Full automation is expected to become the mainstream design for new metro lines.

The rapid growth of Autonomous rapid transit is driven by urbanization and population growth. It requires large-scale infrastructure to accommodate passengers, train lines and a network of stations. Moreover, a number of other transportation modes such as buses, ferries, motorcycles and bike-sharing stations are usually integrated with rapid transit to provide mobility options for the public. There are many advantages of autonomous rail rapid transit in metropolitan areas, such as reduced capital costs, improved flexibility and faster service delivery.

The speed of the service can be adjusted as needed to meet demand, reducing delays and ensuring high quality services for the public. Automation is also a means to improve safety, as trains are no longer vulnerable to accidents caused by human operator. Rapid transit is an operational and safety enhancement in rail. It takes the guesswork, human error, and variables out of railways, making them more efficient, accurate, and reliable than ever. It is used in cities and metropolitan areas to transport large numbers of people often short distances at high frequency.

The Honolulu Rail Transit Project (the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project) is a light metro system under construction in Honolulu County, Hawaii, U.S. Honolulu Rail Transit Project is being built for driverless future, and will be the first fully autonomous system in the U.S.
