Adhesives and Sealants; Provide Strong Bonds to Structural Components and Watertight Sealing between Substrates
Adhesives and sealants are substances capable of
holding materials or surfaces together. The main difference between them is
that sealants have higher elongation and lower strength as compared to
adhesives. Adhesives connect materials together but are not always elastic.
While, sealants also connect materials, but sealing the joint in between
substrates and can also absorb the movements within the joint. Different types
of adhesives and sealants are available in the market for a variety of
purposes. Each type has its own specific use, and their use can be classified
according to how they are used and what their specific uses are.

and Sealants Market Global Size, Shares, Trends, Outlook, and
Opportunity Analysis, 2022-2028.
Adhesives are used to repair holes or cracks, and
sealants are primarily used to seal leaks in pipes or clogs in irrigation
systems. Their primary function is to provide barrier to prevent air, moisture,
and airborne particles from entering the structure. Sealants are used in different
situations, such as standing seams, metal end laps, roof penetrations, curbs,
expansion joints, roof-to-wall transitions, and more. Some sealants have
electrical properties, which makes them ideal for use in electronics. While, adhesive is any organic material that forms an
adhesive bond. Some are crystalline, while others are more amorphous.
Solvent-based adhesives have a separate category and
require additional conditions for use, such as a solvent-free environment. Water-based
adhesives are developed using a combination of water, polymers, and additives.
They are ideal for both porous and non-porous substrates. Solvent-based
adhesives are a good for applications that requires resistance to high
temperatures, UV exposure, or other environmental factors. Adhesives and
sealants are formulated with same chemicals and technologies, and are used in construction,
automotive, electrical and electronics, woodworking, packaging, footwear
manufacturing, and others.
When a sealant is used the space becomes air and water
tight. In contrast, adhesives are primarily used to bind services together. Thus,
there is an increase in demand for adhesives and sealants. In August 2022, PPG planned
to invest US$ 9 million to expand an existing product line at its Temple, Texas
facility. The project expanded PPG’s adhesives and sealants line to meet
growing demand.
