Traffic sensors are used to collect road traffic information for signal control, and the data collected is also supplied to the Vehicle Information and Communication System Center (VICS Center). A sensor detects the presence of a vehicle using the reflection of ultrasonic waves transmitted from ultrasonic transmitters/receivers installed directly above the road. They are used for the purpose of measuring traffic volume and occupancy rates by means of a stable sensory function. It is used to collect traffic flow, vehicle's occupancy, length, and speed.

According to Coherent Market Insights the Traffic Sensor Market Global Industry Insights, Trends, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2022-2028.

The Inductive Loop Detector (ILD) sensor is one of the most commonly used traffic sensor. ILD is one of the most popular traffic detector in use. It works on the basis of the principle of mutual inductance and detects vehicles by measuring the change in inductance due to the presence on top of the sensor. The change in voltage measured is commonly called the vehicle signature and is the raw output from the detector system. ILD sensors are one of the most widely used traffic sensors because of their high accuracy and cost effectiveness.

Traffic sensors also help improve the capacity and efficiency of transportation networks. Several types of traffic sensors, such as passive infrared sensors, passive acoustic sensors, magnetometers, ultrasonic sensor, microwave radar sensors, laser radar sensors, inductive-loop detectors, and video image processors are available in the market. Application of these sensors includes measurement of vehicle volume, mainline control, traffic signal control, and incident detection. However, there are different types of traffic sensors and they fall into several categories.

Each of these has its own specific uses but all are designed to provide information about traffic levels in a controlled environment. Each of these types of sensors can be used to detect a number of different events. According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), over the past years, sensor manufacturers have developed new, more effective vehicle detection technologies, such as traffic sensors, particularly for over-roadway sensors.
