Urine Collection Bags Are Of Several Different Types with Various Features Such As a Twist Drainage Outlet Valve, Reusability, Single-Use, and More
Urine
Collection Bags, also called catheter drainage bags, are large-capacity bags
that are used to collect urine while the patient is laying down. The bags need
to be changed whenever they start to look discolored or show signs of wear and
tear. The bags typically have a life span of around a month. There are many
different types of urine drainage bags. Some have a twist drainage outlet
valve, which makes them easier to use and have less spillage. Others are
designed to be emptied frequently. The size of a drainage bag is important, as
it will affect how frequently it is emptied.

Opportunity Analysis, 2022-2028.
Urine
collection bags can be single-use or reusable. Single-use bags usually have a
tear-off portion that should be washed between uses. Reusable bags have a
drainage tap and are intended to be worn under clothing. A reusable urine
collection bag can be used up to five nights, depending on the volume of urine
being collected. For high-volume drainage, there are also plastic or glass
collection bottles. These are usually secured around the waist or thigh and are
most convenient during the day.
Most urine
collection bags have needle-free urine sampling ports to reduce the risk of
needle-stick injuries and prevent infection. The needle-free port is made of a
special ridged universal connector that works with most common catheters. If
the urine sample is collected using a needle-free bag, the needle-free port
should be disinfected prior to use.
A urine
collection bag may have a tear tab or other textured surfaces that increase the
braking effect. These bags may also be made of resilient thermoplastics,
polyurethanes, or silicones. Preferably, these materials are USP Class VI or
PNC. For example, Alpha Gary Corporation makes a urine collection bag with PNC
and medical grade USP-Class VI.
Urine
collection bags should be cleaned on a regular basis. Ideally, they should be
cleaned with a solution of two parts vinegar to three parts water. This will
reduce the smell and keep the bag free of germs. The solution should be left
inside the urine collection bag for 30 minutes and drained from it with cold
water. In December 2021, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc. announced the
launch of intermittent urological catheter consisting tube and connector and
contains an integrated urine collection bag.
