Paints and coatings are made of pigments, binders and other additives. These additives can be organic or inorganic. Most paints are water-based, while some are solvent-based. Oil-based paints are still widely used. There are several advantages to using oil-based paints, including their durability and gloss. However, water-based paints have become competitive with oil-based paints.

Paints are pigmented liquids that are applied on a surface to give it a shiny appearance. They are available in a variety of colors, and are usually applied on wooden, metallic, or cement surfaces. Oil paints are known for their durability and water resistance. They are also popular for their rich, glossy finishes.

The Global Paints and Coatings Market is projected to surpass US$ 220 billion by the end of 2027, in terms of revenue, growing at CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period (2020 to 2027).

Paints and coatings are used in a variety of industries. They are usually applied in liquid form, forming decorative and protective coatings on surfaces. Some coatings, such as lacquer, provide a hard and durable finish.

Among the types of paints, there are oil-based paints, water-based paints, acrylic paints, and shellac. Each of these types offers a different set of benefits. Oil-based paints can be highly durable, making them a good choice for exterior surfaces such as wood. However, water-based paints are also popular for their ability to resist corrosion. Water-based paints are also available in a variety of finishes, including matte, semi-gloss, and gloss.

While the basic ingredients of paints and coatings are fairly simple, there are a number of additives that can have a large impact on the appearance and performance of the finished product. Some of these additives include emulsifiers, UV stabilizers, and thickeners. Miscellaneous additives, such as rust inhibitors and rust removers, can be added in small amounts to improve the finish of a product.

The most common application methods for paints and coatings are spraying and hot airless spraying. Spraying uses a high-pressure system to atomize the paint and travels to the article being painted.

A variety of coatings are available, from water-based paints to varnishes, which can be applied to metal, concrete, and other surfaces. Although most industrial coatings provide some level of esthetic value, they are most commonly used to protect and prevent corrosion.

The Sherwin-Williams Company signed an agreement with the city of Statesville and the state of North Carolina, Iredell County in February 2022, for expanding the architectural paint and coatings manufacturing capacity. They are investing USD 300 million for establishing a larger facility in Statesville.
